"Whisper of the Land" Special Bio Page
Edward Levinson Bio Publishing Background
As an essayist and poet Edward has published a memoir/essay book Whisper of the Land (2014) and a Balloon on Fire book of haiku (2019); he published two essay books in Japanese (Iwanami Shoten). His short movie Tokyo Story was an Official Selection at six film competitions; his other short films have also won awards.
In the mid 1990’s Edward began focusing more on art photography mainly using a simple pinhole camera. Interest in this work continues and has spawned more than 60 exhibitions in Japan and abroad. Kyoto was often a muse and he exhibited there many times. He published an award winning photo book Timescapes Japan in 2006. In 2019 he self-published 3 photo books to commemorate being in Japan 40 years.
Within traditional publishing, Edward’s travel and culture pieces appeared regularly in ANA’s “Wingspan” magazine for 30 years, including an entertaining food column that ran for nearly 5 years. He also contributed frequently to Jijigaho-sha’s “Pacific Friend”, a now discontinued graphic print magazine in English about Japan. His writings and photos appeared as regular rensai columns in a variety of Japanese magazines. Being able to do the photography for his written pieces or supply poetic text to go with photo essays was always a plus.
As a photographer he has collaborated on 10 Japanese books on food, flowers and lifestyle with his Japanese partner Tsuruta Shizuka working with well-known publishers including Iwanami Shoten, Shibata Shoten, Bungei Shunju, and Ie no Hikari Shuppan. For them, the golden era for these types of books was in the 1990’s and early 2000’s.
He lives on Chiba’s Boso Peninsula inspired by nature and his garden.
